Sam Altman, CEO and co-founder of OpenAI, has reportedly discussed a potential £2 billion ($2.5 billion) proposal to provide free premium access to ChatGPT for all residents of the United Kingdom.

According to The Guardian, the idea was raised during a meeting in San Francisco between Altman and UK Technology Secretary Peter Kyle, as part of broader talks on possible collaboration between OpenAI and the UK government.

While the proposal would make ChatGPT Plus—currently priced at $20 per month and offering faster responses along with early access to new features—free for UK users, the report notes that Kyle did not treat the idea as a serious option due to its enormous cost.

Nonetheless, the discussion underscores both OpenAI’s ambitions and the UK government’s growing interest in advancing the AI sector, despite lingering concerns around issues of accuracy, privacy, and copyright.
